About the Opportunity

As part of the Regulatory Services Program, the Graduate Environmental Health Officer will gain practical experience helping protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the community across the City of Adelaide, including the CBD and North Adelaide.

Working alongside experienced Environmental Health Officers, you’ll build your knowledge and confidence across food safety, public health and environmental health regulation. You’ll have the opportunity to get out into the community, participate in inspections and investigations, contribute to health education programs and see how your knowledge can be applied to real-world public health challenges.

With a combination of on-the-job learning, professional development and hands-on experience, this is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for your environmental health career while making a tangible contribution to the community.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Graduated within approximately the last two years or are expecting to graduate within approximately the next 6 months in Environmental Health or related field.
• Working knowledge of the Food Act, South Australian Public Health Act, Supported Residential Facilities Act, relevant Australian Standards and Codes of Practice.
• Familiarity with the Local Government Act, Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act, Expiation of Offences Act & Environment Protection Act.
• Knowledge of the physical, biological and social sciences related to health issues.
• Ability to provide welcoming, responsive and respectful customer service to colleagues and community members, with a commitment to continuous learning, professional development and applying feedback.
• Ability to take ownership and accountability for deliverables.
• Skilled in communication and being able to present effectively both orally and written.
• Strong organisational skills, the ability to successfully manage competing priorities, maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines.

• Development: Approximately 40 hours of professional development over the graduate program, including participation in the City Leaders program and a collaborative group project with other graduates.
• Regular check-ins: You’ll have regular 1:1 conversation with your leader to ensure ongoing support, goal setting, wellbeing checks and guidance.
• Hone your skills: Opportunities to develop a broad range of transferable skills relevant to various government roles federal, state and local. 
• Networking opportunities: within the City Council and the broader government sector.
