About the Opportunity
As part of the Financial Planning & Reporting team, the Financial & Capital Accountant plays a key role in preparing the annual statutory financial statements for the Corporation of the City of Adelaide and its Subsidiaries, ensuring compliance with relevant Accounting Standards and legislative requirements. The role provides trusted financial planning, analysis and advice to the Capital Program, supporting effective financial management and decision-making across Council’s major projects and programs.
The Financial & Capital Accountant partners with stakeholders to deliver accurate financial planning, management accounting and performance reporting that supports strategic outcomes. This includes maintaining the Council’s fixed asset register in line with the Australian Accounting Standards and internal policies, overseeing financial governance for projects and programs, and advising on the accounting treatment for grants and funding arrangements. The role also supports the preparation of taxation returns including BAS and FBT, contributes to process improvement initiatives, and assists with ad-hoc projects as required.
In addition to providing hands-on financial support, the position plays an important role in building financial capability across the organisation through mentoring and training. This includes delivering financial system inductions and developing understanding of management accounting principles and processes.

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A tertiary qualification in Commerce, Finance, Accounting or related field, and will be CA or CPA qualified
- Significant accounting experience incorporating analysis and problem-solving principles within a medium to large organisation.
- Working knowledge of accounting and business disciplines including financial accounting, compliance reporting, base budget development, variance reporting and systems development and improvement.
- Able to demonstrate prior experience in their ability to identify trends in data and highlight areas requiring focus, including the provision of advice for decision making.
- Ability to provide financial advice and support to Council employees across the organisation.
- A commitment to internal and external customers demonstrated through the provision of timely, reliable, and expert advice on matters within area of responsibility.
